Blackstone To Open West Coast Office

Office will be led by former Citigroup technology investment banker Ivan Brockman.

The Blackstone Group said Wednesday that it plans to open an office in Menlo Park, Calif., hiring former Citigroup technology investment banker Ivan Brockman as a senior managing director to head its West Coast technology corporate banking advisory business.

Brockman, who has more than 14 years of technology investment banking experience, will serve as the investment banking coverage counterpart to Chris Pasko, a senior managing director who heads a half dozen-strong team for Blackstone's East Coast technology M&A banking practice based in Boston.

"We’re going to focus on the advice we can provide to a whole variety of companies that are in technology, so we’ll be fairly diverse in that respect," Brockman said.

Brockman, 38, has already begun ramping up the new California office with the hire of one vice president and two analysts.

Prior to joining New York-based Blackstone, Brockman served as co-head of the West Coast technology investment banking unit at Citigroup, where he led its enterprise systems and software industries banking effort. While at Citigroup, which he joined in 2004, Brockman served on several investment banking committees.

Before he joined Citigroup, Brockman was a banker at Goldman Sachs, which he joined in 1999. He worked in the bank's technology, media and telecom investment banking group.

Brockman also worked with noted Silicon Valley attorney Larry Sonsini while at Wilson Sonsini Goodrich & Rosati, the Palo Alto, Calif.-based law firm chaired by Sonsini. Brockman joined the law firm in 1994 before leaving for a stint in Lazard's San Francisco office in the late 1990's.

John Studzinski, head of Blackstone’s advisory businesses, said of Brockman’s hire: “He brings a wealth of experience in technology to our rapidly growing global advisory capabilities. His long association with a multitude of technology industries will add significantly to our ability to advise clients in this area.”
